Larry Ebersole
is a West Coast poet whose  work appears in "Am Here Forum", "Struggle", "Zambomba", "ZNet" and
"Indymedia S.F".
I value a poetry of witness and with Amnesty
International/Puget Sound recently co-produced
"Reflections for a Just Earth Day"  which included the poetry of Ken Saro-Wiwa.
I often like to dedicate my readings to the release of
a political prisoner of conscience and am active with the Seattle International Human Rights Coalition. I
do advocacy and support work in the not for profit sector in Seattle.

Bombing

They
are bombing
with 500 pound gravity bombs
dropped from B52s
at high altitude
into a "kill box"
then re-bombing
with 15,000 pound
fuel air explosives

They
are bombing
with 5000 pound laser-guided
pounders that burrow a cave-hole
(hear the screams upon detonation)

They are bombing
with cruise missiles
(lacking authority
for nuclear winter warheads)

They are bombing
with cluster bombs
filled with yellow bomblets
exploding barbed wire
fragments the color
of humanitarian food packets
(it's all for the children)

They are bombing
a nation's agriculture
(so destruction will not grow)

They are bombing
Social Security
and pension funds
(health insurance
for every generation's
injuries and care)

They are bombing away
retraining programs
for airline industry employees
(for employment and art programs
and worthwhile non-profit jobs
helping hungry bewildered
survivors tolerate
the social contradictions)
along with warm meals

They are bombing
to show bombing is wrong
and terror is the norm
(they are bombing a nation
not a military threat)

They are bombing human rights
and international law
(to promote alternatives to hijackings)

They are bombing
the Bill of Rights
(to begin military tribunals and torture
of mocha skinned suspects in secret detention
with names longer than four letters)

Who
are they
to order bombing
(it feels like a coup)

Who
are they
to bomb away
the oceanic samba
of civil society
to bomb
the poignant harvest
an entire generation
labors to articulate
